More serious problems, especially those that require data recovery and a reinstall of Windows, I can resolve on our collect and return service. Generally this means I need only keep the computer for a day.

We also set up computers, upgrade them and set up home / business networks. The computers I work on run Windows Vista, XP, 2000, ME and 98. I occasionally get Apple Macs and Ubuntu Linux to help with as well.

Here are some ideas for keeping your XP or Vista PC well maintained:

1. Make sure you have antivirus software that's up to date. I like AVG or Avast, both of which are free.
2. You also need antispy software. I like Microsoft Windows Defender which is free for XP and is pre-installed on Vista.
3. Ensure you have enough RAM (random access memory). 512MB for XP and ideally 2GB for Vista.
4. Your hard drive should be less than 80% full. Check it via My Computer.
5. A good graphics card is needed for complex games (like World of Warcraft).
6. You can check your broadband speed by visiting bandwidthplace.
7. Keep a regular backup of your photos, music, work etc. External hard drives or memory sticks are great for this.
